Interview for Swide

A few days ago I had the pleasure to be interviewed and featured at Swide. I'm so grateful and honored, It's been more than a year now since I started this blog (which I'll talk about deeper in a few days). This particular event has made me think about my work so far, and the projects I've been involved in. This might not have happened without the help and support from Marcus Kan, so I feel a huge sense of gratitude towards him.

Prada Spring 2014

_____

I'm in love with Prada's prints for this collection. The whole collection has some sort of nostalgic vibe: the motifs, the shades of color, and the silhouettes. I like the way Miuccia creates clothes that look relaxed but sophisticated at the same time, every garment catches the eye instantly. There were two pieces that I would love to have: this amazing red bag with yellow and black details, and this sweater (apocalyptic/deserted graphic).

Moncler Gamme Bleu Spring 2014

_____

I'm not a big fan of sports; however, every Moncler collection makes me wanna be involved in any sport just to have an excuse to wear those clothes. Regardless of practicing a sport or not, the pieces of the collection would look amazing even as separate pieces, considering that white is quite versatile. The blazers look as charming as every Thom Browne creation. And the presentation wouldn't have been complete without the perfect dramatic touch, the black lipstick. I can't wait for the Thom Browne spring collection! Full collection here.

Neil Barrett Spring 2014

_____

Barret's spring collection was all about halftone checkered patterns, clean lines and silhouettes and quite versatile pieces. I really liked the color palette and the transition between monochrome to stronger contrasts. I can't get enough of those halftone bomber jackets.

Soul Voyage Finale

_____

This is the conclusion of my collaboration with Draw a Dot. It was a rather exciting experience to work on this series and I'm glad that you can actually link all the pieces now. If you pay close attention, you can see that the illustration above is a gif, and it depicts the plot of Soul Voyage, which is the dimension leaps! You can read the last part and more about the making of this series on this post at Draw a Dot.

Alexander McQueen Spring 2014

_____

McQueen's collection has this eerie vibe, almost ghost-like; the color palette reminds me of old clothing, and a bit of bare bones. I can't stop thinking about x-rays and copy machines looking at the faded prints on some of the garments. Most of the pieces look quite elegant with the lacing and the perfect use of patterns and detail. Full collection here.

Christopher Kane Spring 2014

_____

Leaving behind the black & white horror nostalgia on the fall collection, Christopher Kane delivers a collection of edgier graphics with an electric color palette. There's an interesting take on the regular shirt, as they added a row of buttons coming down from under the collar all the way to the end of the sleeves. One of the things I like about this collection is that we get a sharp sartorial work, mixed with sportswear and casual clothing. You can watch the entire collection here.

portrayal : Thomas Azier

_____

Azier is an electro-pop artist from Berlin. I was instantly hooked with his beats and his voice when I first heard his music. His songs are mainly composed of synthesizer beats and strong vocals. He might be a newcomer in the industry, but I think his sharp consolidated style makes him a very promising artist in the electro scene (you can see what I'm talking about on any of his videos). What I like about artist like him is the way they work out a concept, and deliver worthy pieces of work. He has already 2 EPs out and a new single coming out later this month, so be sure to follow his lead.

You can listen to his second EP Hylas 002 below:

Soul Voyage VIII

'Valerie has no idea why the clouds brought her here but suddenly, the pond starts to transform into a mirror. When she looks at it, she sees a boy dropping down from a mountain and she wants to rescue him. She uses her hands to touch the mirror surface and immediately her body starts to disappear in this world. When she opens her eyes again, she has realized she is no longer in the forest. Instead, she is now in the bottom of a mountain. Valerie has entered the new dimension and on the floor, she finds a bag pack with the name tag "Lamont" attached to it..."

This is the past piece of Valerie's story, but the Soul Voyage series continues on June.
Stay tuned and follow the story at Draw a Dot too.

At this moment, strange clouds start to show up in front of her and it seems like they are guiding her to solve this mystery. After some time of walking, they finally arrive at the pond."

Follow the story at Draw a Dot too, the conclusion of the series is near and the mystery between Lamont and Valerie is about the be revealed.

Soul Voyage VI

'Valerie uses the key to unlock the door and enters into the room. She is very surprised her grandfather has such a magical room because it is technically a forest. All the plants in this place are glowing and shooting stars are continuously popping up in the sky. She does not understand why her grandfather never brought her to this room as it is so pretty and peaceful. Then, she realizes she has walked too deep into the forest that she can no longer find the door back home.'

Soul Voyage V

My collaboration with Marcus Kan, from Draw a Dot, continues with a parallel story. This time inspired by the Louis Vuitton Fall 2013 womenswear collection.

'Not long ago, Valerie's grandfather passed away and he left her with a key to a magical room in his mansion. He never told her what's inside the room, but once warned her that it can transport people to another dimension, and the person can never go back. Now Valerie is in front of the room's door and since the person she loves the most is now dead, she has decided to unlock the mystery.'

Met Gala 2013

"I respect a lot of the beauty and intelligence of Rooney. I deliver something that belongs to her skin."
- Riccardo Tisci

_____

My excitement over the Met Gala doubled when I saw Florence Welch and Rooney Mara. I have a very particular admiration towards their work and their presence. I think the outfits worn by these two muses fit them perfectly, no wonder we see them wearing Givenchy Haute Couture every now an then on the red carpet. Bravo Tisci!

Cover Me: Thom Browne

Thom Browne Fall 2012

Besides the monster-like proportions and shapes & the interesting punk twist on the sartorial work, every single detail of the garments shown on Browne's collection was taken in consideration. The tartan designs were combined with series of metallic studs of various sizes, following different patterns. The use of embroidered graphics is also presented in an impeccable way. Even the music played during the runway added a more intense and epic vibe to the collection; as it usually is on every Thom Browne collection.

The Surreal Charm

©Tim Walker for W Magazine
_____________________________________

I usually come across fantastic fashion shoots as I scroll down my tumblr. dashboard; this particular time however, there was something that triggered an immense excitement in me, as well as an endearing déjà vu feel. I had already seen the latest Tim Walker shoot photos he did for W Magazine, featuring the ingenious Tilda Swinton, but it was this particular image above that sparked something inside my memories archive. I've only seen that particular kind of architecture in a very far away place near my hometown. And in fact it is the place I was thinking of: a fantastic set of constructions built in the jungle by creative mastermind Edward James, called 'Las Pozas' in Xilitla, México. (you can read a brief story of this place over here)

As you make your way through the quirky passages and the fantastic vegetation, you can confirm that sense that these huge surreal structures are actually merged with the landscape; it's like they're part of it and they coexist to exude the beauty James intended. I've visited this location 3 times, and it's been quite a delightful experience, it's a fantastic thing to see these artistic manifestations take place in this beautiful places you don't get to see on a daily basis. Below you can see some pictures I took on my last trip.

Tim Walker's work never ceases to amaze his audience with his superb work. His photographs have a fantastical vibe where the unreal merges with the real, blurring the line of what's considered as a normal perception of beauty. This same premise was the basic component of the surrealism / magic realism movement that took place among artists in the mid 90's mexican circle. Artists such as Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington created a dimension of their own, worlds that obeyed their own rules and made sense in their own way.

Last year I had the chance to experience several art exhibitions where the work, of both Varo and Carrington, was exposed. I took pictures of some of the sculptures made by Carrington (I believe she was around her 90's when she made the one you see above) so you can admire the fantastic way Walker condensed his vision on this shoot. Believe it or not, there's sort of a timeless fashion style in the pictorial work; fashion is a very influential and resonating factor in the surreal movement as it works as a connector between the fantastical characters and their surroundings.

I'm in love with the styling done in 'Stranger than Paradise', not only because of the fact that Swinton's unique physical features fit so well in this aesthetic, but also because of the fantastic garments she's wearing. I find Walker's dynamic so interesting, the way he adjoins the runway onto his compositions. There was a time when 'Las Pozas' was almost decaying, therefore, tourism had to be incited in some way to keep this surreal place alive; looking at the whole set of photographs I can't help getting the feeling that the vision of the melange of surrealists takes an even more vivid representation of how this particular place should look like, giving it some kind of life.

The resonance of the work of an artist is what makes him or her feel realized, it gives one the freedom not only to create realities, but to interpret them. It's thrilling to actually watch how fine arts, fashion and photography combine to tell stories, regardless of the difference in eras, movements, language and geography. I think there's some sort of universality to it, images talk by themselves and invite you to believe what they're saying.

Overall, I think this whole collection of concepts and artistic statements go way beyond today's perceptions. W Magazine's 'Modern Beauty' premise makes me think about what we as a society think beauty is, and how most of the times we get into the debate of what the true concept of beauty should be (and it goes on and on). However, I believe that Walker gives us a clear example of what beauty is all about: the celebration of nature's mystical paths alongside the human's most intricate yet amusing ways of expression.
